My FIL told my boys that he does not understand why their dad “likes those Jap cars.” HE DRIVES A FUCKING LEXUS and constantly reminds me that it is nicer than my Infiniti (he paid $25k more). Sigh. I like to think that automotive obsession brings us together. Post your favorite “jap cars” please. Here is the Sunchaser with a great American car and a cool German car.

Forget the cars, did you dress him down for being racist in front of your kids?

You should point at the first letter of his VIN.

I’ve met people who refuse to buy German cars, but they had family murdered in the Nazi camps, so I let it slide.

My grandfather refused to buy any Japanese cars because of WWII even though he was looking at a Mitsubishi Sapporo coupe in the late 70s.

This one’s mine.
And this one’s a 1999 JDM Accord SiR wagon. Might pick one of these up when they become legal to import. They’re dirt cheap and have a powerhouse of an engine.

My grandfather, who escaped Nazi Germany, bought me my Audi. He himself will basically only drive American cars though.

I mean, his Lexus probably IS nicer than the Infiniti, and I am in no way unfairly biased....

Gotta nab myself a VIP Lexus one day.

I know Koreans who won’t buy Japanese cars for similar reasons. Totally fine with that.

Is he voting for Trump? :p
But I do agree that Lexus is better than Infiniti :)
My I30 (4th gen Maxima) was designed in the US and made in Japan. But I hate transverse V6's from any country.
Also, is the Camry considered American or Japanese? The 3rd gen Camry is the best car ever made. That said, I actually like the concept of US-made cars with a foreign nameplate because it lets you support (what’s left of) the American middle class but without supporting greedy American CEO’s.
I could crash Kinja by filing up this thread with hi-res pics of all my favorite Japanese cars. But for now I’ll just post this awesome Echo RS :o)

He bought you an Audi because hardship and frustration build character

The first time I was in Shanghai I was surprised that there were very few Japanese cars on the road. After a minute I realized why.

Kind of Japanese!

Older generations can be forgiven for not wanting to economically support the Germans and the Japanese.
After all, would you buy a car manufactured by Al-Qaeda?

But.... it’s a Lexus

My grandfather was in WW2, Pacific (Aleutians), ended up choosing Toyota and VW as company cars with no qualms, also had a NUMMI Nova (rebadged Corolla). He didn’t care. I look back and realize he was pretty open-minded.
I have a strange attraction to these:

My dad refuses to believe that American cars can handle through the corners. Never mind that the Shelby GT350R just posted a faster lap around Laguna Seca than the new GTR and NSX in MotorTrend’s Best Driver’s Car Competition. And if memory serves, the last gen Camaro Z28 beat the GTR’s lap time in another MotorTrend test. Or that the Viper is faster than anything around a track except for maybe a 918 Spyder.

I dunno. Al-Qaeda would probably make a very utilitarian Hilux.

A first gen Echo hatch was a contender back when I was buying my first and second car. Decided on the Subie and the Accent as there aren’t that many Echos of that gen around here, especially the RS. Not sure if I would like the center angled gauges though...
Edit - Fixed a bunch of typos...stupid iPad autocorrect...

Isn’t that the Cadillac DeVille starting procedure?

That’s just wrong. Not only that, you can hardly claim that most cars are from any one country. I recall one year where they said the car with the most American-made content was a Toyota Avalon.
My Japanese significant other likes Jags, proving that it’s probably time to stop fighting World War II.

If he’s anything like my dad, who has similar rants despite owning multiple Japanese motorcycles, it doesn’t matter.

1989, I actually asked my dad permission to buy an ‘85 CRX si. He was a turret gunner in a B17, though.

Can confirm, owned a DeVille.

My dad’s dad fought the Japanese in WW2. As such, I’m not allowed to buy a single Japanese car; unless it’s a rotary. That’s because a friend and I were able to convince him with a ride in an RX-8.
That’s why we drive Porsches...... (^_^)
No, the irony has not been lost yet.
